I’ve been going though all of my spring sport photos since all but Track and Field has come to an end. My school’s women’s lacrosse team was phenomenal this year, part of why there were such a thrill to photograph.
My favourite part of shooting lacrosse has been nearly getting hit by the balls as they miss the goal. I’m thinking of changing my aspirations as a sports photographer to sports that have a bit more danger involved for the photographer. Perhaps it’s my youth talking, but when so much time is spent in the digital darkroom, any amount of thrill is greatly appreciated.
Anyway, here is a photo I don’t remember taking, but exemplifies why I shoot with two eyes open. One for the exposure, the other for my life.

I was asked by a friend to take pictures for her sorority. This job included portraits and group shots outside in a community garden. Terrified, I agreed seeing this as an opportunity to further my craft and gain experience.
I went in more confident in my abilities than with previous shoots, which I attribute to working with friends as opposed to strangers. Another thing I did differently was imagine what the photo would look like before taking it, slowing down. The result of these two changes were better photos than I usually get, and I was less reliant on my subjects.
There was so much I took away from this, it turned out to be an invaluable learning opportunity at every step.

For a class this semester, we were to take photos with Holga cameras. I made a deal with my professor to use a D-SLR and a plastic lens in lieu of the full plastic/film experience. Some of my favourites have been posted already, so there may be some repeats.

Part of our deal was for me to make my photos appear as though they were taken with a plastic camera. At first glance, I would criticise myself for a lack of grain. Notwithstanding, I’m pleased with the results.

I had such a joy with this course, I’ve decided to experiment with film. In fact, I have a new - to me - camera on the way.

More photos to come.

I found a couple photos with fairly high contrast and proceeded to play with the colours.

I’ve tried split toning before, but not with any success. That’s not to say what I’ve done here is a masterpiece, but it at least makes sense here.

The other is the combination of a sunset, pollution, and hue adjustments, saturation, and luminescence. Hue adjustments have to be my favourite manipulation, they’re very fun and make subtle changes.
